Taz Walker- Medical School in Grenada

Age when Abroad: 27

Race/Ethnicity: Black

I grew up in an urban community called Park Hill in Denver, CO. Growing up, individuals rarely traveled outside of my neighborhood–let alone to a different country. In fact, a passport almost seemed like a luxury. Though I attended the Univerity of Colorado Boulder as an undergrad and had the opportunity to study abroad, I was still intimidated by the cost of the program. I thoroughly regret not utilizing the services my university provided to travel and study internationally. However, I finally came to a realization and later took advantage of international programs-despite the travel costs- in Costa Rica as well as Brazil, which ultimately commenced my love for traveling outside the US.

Currently, I am an international student and attend St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada and I overwhelmingly enjoy it. I feel like I’m making up for the missed opportunity of studying abroad as an undergrad while also accomplishing my goal of becoming a physician. I believe that spending time abroad for an extended period is an experience that everyone needs to have–especially those that come from underserved communities. Being exposed to different cultures and experiences highlights that the world is more expansive and complex than in the neighborhood I grew up in. It has also expanded my mind to where I can live like a “Grenadian” while also appreciating where I come from.

My experience in Grenada as a medical student has been extremely positive. Not only am I immersed in the culture of Grenada, but I am also receiving an exceptional education. Grenada is a beautiful country with extraordinary beaches as well as other attractions. I'm thankful for having the opportunity to live here while obtaining an education. Going to an international school has also allowed me to meet and interact with students from all across the globe, which provides a unique experience regarding social interactions. Furthermore, living in Grenada gives me a different perspective in comparison to where I’m from, especially through the lens of medicine, which I believe expands my overall tentative being. I have ultimately been fortunate to participate in their customs, try national dishes, meet new people, and explore the country.

I did not plan on coming to Grenada, but I am content with the outcome. I would recommend to every young person that if there is an opportunity to travel abroad then don’t hesitate. Lately, I’ve said that if I was wealthy, I would spend my time traveling the world, observing different cultures’ healthcare systems. We only have one life and incorporating world travel lacks zero negatives. I am a tremendous supporter of encouraging individuals who are not exposed to traveling abroad. I believe being well traveled is an essential life quality, which makes you a more well-rounded person.
